Dot-matrix displays build every character from a grid of dots — five columns by seven rows is the classic size for numbers and capital letters. They are the displays on departure boards, shop signs and old ticket machines.

Every dot on this clock is drawn individually, with the unlit ones faintly visible so the grid reads as an LED panel. It shows hours, minutes and seconds, or minutes, seconds and hundredths in stopwatch mode, with a blinking colon in clock mode.

Where it's useful

  • A station-board look for a transport, event or retro page
  • A scoreboard-style timer for a game or class
  • A distinctive full-screen clock
  • A bright amber countdown

Three ways to use it

  • Clock — the time of day in your time zone or any city, in 12- or 24-hour form.
  • Stopwatch — counts up with laps; press Lap while it runs.
  • Countdown — counts down from any time you set, sounds at zero, then counts overtime.

Every face runs entirely in your browser, remembers your settings on this device, and can be embedded on your own page.

Questions

How many dots is each character?

Five wide and seven tall, the standard size for a basic dot-matrix character.

Can I change the colour?

Yes. Amber is the default, but red, green and blue all look good.

Does the text scroll?

No. The time stays still so it is easy to read.
